What is Hajj?

The fifth pillar of Islam — a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for every capable Muslim.

  • 3. Tawaf al-Ifadah (Circumambulation of the Kaaba): Performing seven circuits around the Kaaba after returning from Arafah and Muzdalifah. This Tawaf represents the central act of worship.
  • 4. Sa'i between Safa and Marwah: Walking seven times between the two hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar's (Hagar's) search for water for her son Ismail.
  • The Obligations (Wajibat) of Hajj

    • 1. Entering Ihram from the Meeqat: The designated boundary points set by the Prophet ﷺ. Crossing the Meeqat without Ihram requires a Dam.
    • 2. Staying at Arafah until sunset: Arriving before sunset and remaining until after it (for those who arrived in the daytime).
    • 3. Spending the night at Muzdalifah: After leaving Arafah, staying at Muzdalifah on the night of the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah.
    • 4. Throwing pebbles at Jamarat: Stoning the three pillars (Jamarat) in Mina on the days of Tashreeq, symbolizing the rejection of Shaytan.
    • 5. Shaving or cutting hair (Halq/Taqsir): After the stoning on Eid day, men shave or cut their hair. Women cut a small amount.
    • 6. Tawaf al-Wida' (Farewell Circumambulation): The final act before leaving Makkah. If a pilgrim leaves without it, a Dam is required. Exception: A woman who is menstruating or in a state of post-natal bleeding (nifas) is exempt from Tawaf al-Wida — she may depart without performing it and no Dam is required. This ruling is established in the authentic Sunnah (Al-Bukhari & Muslim).

    6. Cultivate Patience for the Crowds

You will be surrounded by millions of people from different cultures, languages, and backgrounds. You will face pushing, noise, heat, and exhaustion. This is part of the test. The Prophet ﷺ specifically warned against arguments and obscenity during Hajj. Respond to every provocation with patience, gentleness, and a smile.

    Remember the Ultimate Reward

The Prophet ﷺ said: \"There is no reward for a Hajj Mabrur (an accepted Hajj) except Paradise.\" (Al-Bukhari & Muslim). Keep this in your heart at every difficult moment of the journey.

    The Talbiyah

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la shareeka lak.

\"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.\"

    Upon First Seeing the Kaaba

Allahuma zid hadhal-bayta tashreefan wa ta'ziman wa takreeman wa mahabatan, wa zid man sharrafahu wa karramahu mimman hajjahu aw i'tammarahu tashreefan wa takreeman wa birran.

\"O Allah, increase this House in honor, esteem, nobility, and reverence, and increase those who honor and respect it — among those who perform Hajj or Umrah — in honor, nobility, and piety.\"

    Dua at Safa & Marwah

    إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ

Begin by reciting this verse (Al-Baqarah 2:158), then make any personal dua in your own language. Repeat three times on Safa before starting.

Dua at Arafah (The Greatest Day)

The Prophet ﷺ said: \"The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of Arafah.\"

\"There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the sovereignty and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.\" Repeat frequently, then make personal dua for everything you need in this world and the next.

    Farewell Tawaf Dua

Allahumma inna hadhal-bayta baytuka wal-haramu haramuka wal-amnu amnuka wa hadha maqamu al-'a'idhi bika minan-nar.

\"O Allah, this House is Your House, and this sanctuary is Your sanctuary, and this security is Your security. And this is the station of one who seeks refuge with You from the Fire.\"
